Cool time and cost saver for landlords – Quick change locks

I was browsing some fellow real estate blogs and came across thelandlordblog.com written by Anesia Springborn.  She wrote a nice post about a cool lock system that makes changing out locks a whole lot easier and cheaper.

I thought this lock system was so cool that I decided to write up my own little posting to give you a bit more information on it.  (thanks for the heads up on the product Anesia)

If you’re a landlord you undoubtedly have come across the pain in changing the door locks after a tenant moves out. I know I have.  I have to pay my handyman to go over there, spend his 10-15 minutes playing mechanic on the lock just so he can change the guts of the lock.  It usually ends up costing me at least $20 everytime I have a lock changed (I could do it myself but that just isn’t “passive” income is it..)

Anyway, there’s a cool quick change lock system for landlords made by Kwikset that lets you change the lock in some rediculous amount of time like 3 SECONDS!  And to answer the question you are thinking… no it isn’t very expensive at all.  About the same as a normal lockset for the whole knob/deadbolt system… and a little less than $10 for the rechangable cylinders.

Here’s an illustration of how the system works…

Looks pretty simple huh?  At first I was wondering just how strong the lock could be if it “pops” out like that… but it’s actually just as strong if not stronger than conventional locks according to Kwikset.

One more cool bit about this lock system is that these locks are master keyed… so you only have to carry one key around for all of your units.

Anesia has a company she gets her landlord locks from and really loves them.  Check out their website.  I’m on my way to order a bunch right now for my properties.  It will save me some bucks in the long run.
