Analysis of top real estate investing sites by traffic - May 2007

Hi all!  I’m curious by nature and just thought that I’d do a little analysis to find out what the real undisputed heavyweight in real estate investing websites is.

Of course, there are hundreds of real estate investing education websites out there… but there are a few “communities” that tend to get a bit more traffic for one reason or another.

So… for the purposes of this analysis… I used my past experience with real estate investing websites and good ol’ Google for finding the “top sites” out there.  Of course, I’m sure there are sites that should be included and some that shouldn’t be on the list… but this analysis isn’t meant to be scientific… just a bit of fun.

In this analysis I chose 5 real estate investing education sites.

You’re probably thinking… “what about www.thereibrain.com ?”  Ha… give us some time… and we’ll get up there with the big boys.  This site is pretty new and we only have about 50% of our content up… so keep checking back.

Anyhow, here is the graph of the analysis.  This graph looks at a 3 month time span from early February to today.

This graph goes over daily reach.  What that really means… who cares.  You don’t need to know.  The thing to look at is the trends and where each site is compared to the others.

The first thing to note is the overall leader reiclub.com.  Except for a few periods here and there, that site tends to have a greater overall reach than the others.

Next, the bottom site on this list jockeys back and forth between thecreativeinvestor.com and flippinghomes.com.  Both of these sites are decent sites… but seem to be a bit more niche sites than the other top sites.  Of course, along with niche comes a smaller market.  (but not necessarily smaller profits)

Right in the middle are biggerpockets.com and creonline.com.  Creonline has been the #1 site for the ultra competitive keyword term “real estate investing” for quite a while now… and they will probably stay there for a few reasons.

  1. Their active and extremely search engine friendly forums.
  2. The large amount of inbound links… mostly because creonline.com has been around much longer than the rest of the sites and has had more time to collect a ton of links.
  3. A bunch of good articles.

Biggerpockets.com has a growing and active community in its forums that is driving its growth.  You can see that biggerpockets.com has been steadily inching above creonline.com from time to time.  In addition, the 5,000+ blog readers are helping to keep the traffic rolling in to biggerpockets.

Reiclub.com and creonline.com have their growth and traffic without any blog at all.  Most of their traffic comes from their active communities and a ton of articles.  Personally, I don’t prefer Reiclub.com.  I just don’t get the right feeling from the site and it is hugely centered on pushing products.  Nothing wrong with that at all… I’m sure reiclub.com is among the most profitable real estate investing sites.

One thing that’s kind of cool to see is how all of the sites kind of stay on the same plane.  When one site goes up a bit… all of them tend to go that direction a bit.  This must just be the patterns of the visitors and the time of year.  You can see that in the beginning of March each site saw a little spike.  Now, in early May, the traffic on all 5 sites is dipping down.

What does all of this mean?  Well… not a whole lot to most people.  Overall, it shows that the demand for real estate information is pretty constant and out of these 5 site in the last 3 months… there doesn’t seem to be one site in particular that has a large upward growth trend.

It also shows that strong communities, updated blogs, and a lot of articles are what people are looking for.

Well, take it for what it’s worth… but it’s just a good little bit o’ information I thought I’d pass on.

As for us over here at thereibrain.com… we’re working on piling in EXCLUSIVE AND UNIQUE content for real estate investors that isn’t out there anywhere in one place.  I know when I was starting this is the exact info I was looking for… and we’re hearing a lot of the same things lately. So… keep checking back.  This time next year hopefully we’ll see www.thereibrain.com on the top 5 chart.

In the next few weeks I’ll do a quick review of those 5 sites to give you a little better idea of exactly what each one is about.
