Top 5 Questions To Ask When Hiring Carpet Installers

Now that you’ve got your replacement carpet ordered, you need to find a reputable carpet installer to finish the job. Many carpet suppliers have their own installers but if you’re not sure of their quality, you can certainly do some research and find a carpet installer on your own.

However, don’t just hire the first person who gives you a low bid. There are certain questions you need to ask to insure you’re hiring someone who is reputable and not someone who will do a lousy job.

1. Are you licensed, bonded and insured?

All types of contractors and small business owners should have a state license and business liability insurance. Contractors who do work on other people’s properties should also be bonded, which means there are secured funds available should the customer make a claim about property damage or unfinished work. If a carpet installer is legitimate, they won’t have any problems answering this question and supplying you with their license number.

2. What kind of experience do you have?

Ideally you want to hire a carpet installer who has done many jobs that are similar to yours. There’s a large difference between installing upgraded, premium carpet in a custom home versus low grade carpet in a series of apartment units. Be sure to ask how long they have been doing installations. Someone brand new will most likely work more slowly and possibly make more mistakes than contractors with years of experience.

3. How much do you charge per square yard?

Prices for carpet installations will vary widely, depending on where you live, but don’t assume the cheapest price is the best choice. Some carpet installers with glowing references and years of experience might charge more than someone just starting out but you most likely will have a better result with the more experienced installer.

When you’re talking price, ask about any extra fees that may apply to the job, such as removal of the old carpet and padding or carpeting stairs. Nobody likes surprises, especially when you’re talking money and budgets.

4. Do you have any references?

Again, any carpet installer or contractor who values their reputation and runs a legitimate business will happily give you a list of past clients to call. The key is to actually take the time to make those phone calls! Ask about what type of project is was (apartment, commercial, new construction, etc), did they complete the job on time, and are you happy with the outcome.

5. How long do you guarantee the work?

Even after using the best carpet installers, you still might find minor problems that need fixing. Installers generally offer 1 -2 year guarantees but some also offer lifetime guarantees on their work. Be sure to get the guarantee in writing.

Doing this research is time consuming but well worth the time investment. Having the carpet installed correctly the first time around will save you money and unnecessary stress.
