Green Home Construction Costly to Builders and Home Buyers

While most people agree that more needs to be done to help our environment, green home construction is still very slow to catch on in many parts of the U.S..

Sure, there are many shows on television specializing in green home improvements, but many builders say it’s not worth putting these green improvements in brand new homes because they can’t make their money back.

Part of the problem is that home appraisers cannot consider the full cost value of the green home improvements but rather what the market will pay for each green improvement. In places such as Seattle where there’s a lot of interest in green homes, this isn’t a problem and their green homes are selling very quickly.

But in other rural parts of the country where living in a green home isn’t as common, these homes are not being appraised at the full cost, which then requires home buyers to increase their down payment.
